How to move a chart from Excel to Word

Microsoft Office provides this access to its users to share content from Excel to Word to some extent. One can easily transfer data in different formats, such as tables or charts, from Excel to Word. It makes it easier for multiple users to work on a document simultaneously.

There are multiple ways to move a chart from Excel to Word. In this tutorial, we will discuss the two most convenient methods to move a chart from Excel to Word.

METHOD 1 – Copy and paste method

In this method, we’ll copy a chart from MS Excel and then we’ll paste it into MS Word.

Consider the following data set containing the amount of production of bricks by a company in a week.

Consider the following steps in order to move a chart from Excel to Word:

STEP 1 – Create a chart in MS Excel

  • Select the whole data set.
  • Go to the Insert tab.
  • Go to the Charts group.
  • Select the chart of your choice, in this case, we’ll select a column chart.
  • A column chart will be created.

STEP 2 – Copy the chart in Excel

  • Select the chart that is created in the previous step.
  • Right-click on it. A drop-down will appear.
  • Click on the Copy option.
  • The chart will be copied.
  • OR simply press Ctrl + C  by clicking on the chart.

STEP 3 – Paste the chart in MS Word

  • Open MS Word and go to the area where you want to paste the chart.
  • Right-click on the area. A drop-down menu will appear.
  • Select the Paste option.
  • The chart will be pasted in MS Word.

METHOD 2 – Save and upload the chart as an image in MS Word.

In this method, first, we’ll save the chart as an image in MS Excel and then we’ll upload it in MS Word.

For this purpose, we’ll use the same data set as in the above case:

STEP 1 – Create a chart in MS Excel

  • Select the whole data set.
  • Go to the Insert tab.
  • Go to the Charts group.
  • Select the chart of your choice, in this case, we’ll select a column chart.
  • A column chart will be created.

STEP 2 – Copy the chart in Excel

  • Select the chart that is created in the previous step.
  • Right-click on it. A drop-down will appear.
  • Click on the Copy option.
  • The chart will be copied.
  • OR simply press Ctrl + C  by clicking on the chart.

STEP 3 – Paste the chart in MS Paint.

  • Go to the Home tab.
  • Click on the Paste command.
  • The chart will be pasted in MS Paint.
  • Click on the Crop button to adjust the size.

STEP 4 – Save the chart in your device from MS Paint as an image

  • Go to the File tab.
  • Select the Save As option.
  • Click on the PNG picture format. A menu will appear.
  • Select the file in which you want to save the picture.
  • Click OK.
  • The chart will be saved as a static image on your device.

STEP 5 – Insert the image in MS Word

  • Open MS Word.
  • Click on the Insert tab.
  • Select the Picture command. A menu will appear.
  • Select the file in which you saved the chart in the previous step.
  • Click on the Insert button.
  • The chart will be uploaded as an image in MS Word.
