How to change decimal places in Google sheets

During the calculation of a numeric data set, we usually find a situation where we have to increase or decrease the decimal place or we have to set a specific style for the decimal place. In such a situation Google sheets offers a built-in tool to manage it by different following methods.

In this tutorial, we will learn how to change decimal places in Google sheets. We have a dataset above in which we have some values and we’ll change the decimal places of these values by using the following methods.

Method 1 – by changing the format of numeric data

This method allows the users to change the format of decimal places by user’s choice for numeric data. In the following case, we have a data set that has decimal value at different places. We want to set the format of our choice at 4th place decimal value. Steps are given below;

Step 1 – Select the data range

  • Select the appropriate data range.
  • In this case we select the cell A11 to B15 as shown above;

Step 2 – Change the format of data cell

  • After selecting the data set, click on the Format tab in the menu bar. A drop down menu will appear.
  • Click on Numbers. A side menu will appear.
  • Click the last option of Custom Number Format.
  • A dialogue box will open.
  • Different formats will be given as templates. You can choose any of them.
  • In this case, we will use our own format for 4th place of decimal value.
  • Type the 00.0000 to show 4 digits after decimal places.
  • Click on APPLY.  All the data range will be changed. As shown above;

Method 2 – by using increasing/decreasing decimal icon

This method allows us to increase or decrease the decimal places by using the built-in tool of Google sheets. This built-in tool is available in the icon bar of Google sheets. There are two icons available by which we can increase decimal places and decrease decimal places of any numeric value. Two examples are given below i.e;

Example 1 – Increasing the decimal places

This built-in tool of Google sheet allows us to increase decimal places just by clicking on it every single click increases the decimal place by one. In the given example we changed the decimal place value from 0 to 5. Hence, we click five times. Major steps are given;

Step 1 – Select the data set and increase the decimal

  • Select the appropriate data set. In this case, we selected cell B11 to C15.
  • Go to the menu bar.
  • Click on the increase decimal places icon.
  • On every click it will increase decimal place by one, click as per your requirement, as shown above;

Example 2 – decreasing the decimal places

This built-in tool of Google sheet allows us to decrease decimal places just by clicking on it. Every single click decreases the decimal place by one. In the given example, we changed the decimal place value from 5 to 1. Hence, we clicked four times. Major steps are given;

Step 1 – Select the data set and decrease the decimal

  • Select the appropriate data set. In this case, we selected cell B11 to C15.
  • Go to the menu bar.
  • Click on the decrease decimal places icon.
  • On every click it will decrease decimal place by one, click as per your requirement as shown above;

Hence, by using above two mentioned methods and examples, we can easily change decimal places in Google sheets.
