How to resolve Break Link not working Issue in Microsoft Excel

Method 1 : Unprotect the Sheet if it is Protected

Step 1 – Check if the Break Links button is dimmed out

  • Go to the Data option in the menu bar.
  • Click on Edit Links in the Queries and Connections section.
  • Check if the Break links button is dimmed out.

Step 2 – Go to the Review Tab

  • Go to the Review tab in the menu bar.

Step 3 – Click on Unprotect Sheet

  • Click on the Unprotect Sheet option in the Protect section.

Step 4 – Enter the Password 

  • Enter the Password in the Unprotect Sheet dialog box.
  • Click on OK

Step 5 – Check If the Break Link function is working

  • Go to the Data Tab in the menu bar.
  • Click on the Edit Links option in the Queries and Connections Section.
  • Check if the Break Link function is enabled.

Method 2 – Change the File Type From .xlsx to .xls

Step 1 – Check if the Break Links button is dimmed out

  • Go to the Data option in the menu bar.
  • Click on Edit Links in the Queries and Connections section.
  • Check if the Break links button is dimmed out.

Step 2 – Click on File Tab 

  • Click on the File tab in the menu bar.

Step 3 – Click on Save As

  • Click on Save As option.
  • Click on the Browse option and select the desired location where you want to save the file.

Step 4 – Change the File Type

  • Change the File type to Excel 93 – 2003 Workbook and click on Save button.

Step 5 – Check If the Break Link function is working

  • Open the file from the saved location.
  • Go to the Data Tab in the menu bar.
  • Click on the Edit Links option in the Queries and Connections Section.
  • Check if the Break Link function is enabled.
