In Excel, when you type a hyphen followed by more numbers and hyphens e.g. -9-9-9, Excel treats the hyphens as a minus sign and the whole entry as an arithmetic operation. To make Excel display such numbers as they are, without summing them, the entry should be preceded by a single quote (‘).
