How to stop Google Sheets from rounding

You can watch a video tutorial here.

Google Sheets is frequently used for calculations and has many functions to help with basic mathematical operations.  The way a number is displayed in a cell is different from the way that it is stored. Sometimes a number is stored with decimal places, but when it is displayed, it is displayed as a whole number. To get Google Sheets to stop rounding, there are 2 ways to change the way that the number is displayed.

  1. Using the button on the ribbon
  2. Using the Custom format option

Option 1 – Use the button on the ribbon

Step 1 – Select the data

  • Select the data for which the rounding is to be stopped

Step 2 – Increase the decimal places

  • Find the Increase decimal places button on the ribbon
  • Keep clicking the Increase decimal places  button until all the decimal places are displayed

Option 2 – Use the Format Cells option

Step 1 – Select the data

  • Select the data for which the rounding is to be stopped

Step 2 – Open the Custom number formats window

  • Go to Format > Number
  • Select Custom number format

Step 3 – Define the format

  • Click Apply

Step 4 – Check the result

  • The numbers are displayed without being rounded off
